‘South Carolina’s Sacred Spaces’: Book seeks to preserve rural churches as attendance drops

Preservation South Carolina is releasing a new photo book in hopes of protecting the increasing number of rural, historic churches facing closings and demolitions.

“South Carolina’s Sacred Spaces” was photographed and written by Bill Fitzpatrick, a freelance photographer who picked up photographing landmarks as a hobby.

“Out of that came this incredible interest in the churches,” Fitzpatrick said. “… I came to love rural churches. They’re special. I think they resonate with so many folks that I’ve spoken with.”

Fitzpatrick says areas like Aiken are full of “hidden gems,” and some Aiken churches are featured out of the 70 he chose for his new book.
