Discover the Upcountry’s “sacred sites;” the churches of the Upcountry are more than just buildings. They are sources of strength and identity, centers of community life, and vibrant expressions of faith and hope. Their wooden walls, soaring steeples and historic graveyards reflect over two hundred years of history – from the simplicity and hardship of the frontier to the elegance of the Old South and the devastation of the Civil War. We will visit Trinity Episcopal Church (Abbeville), Long Cane ARP Church (Troy) and Mount Carmel Presbyterian Church in Mount Carmel, South Carolina.
Photographer and preservationist Bill Fitzpatrick is the author of several books, all of which reflect his interest in travel and history. His most recent effort, a 264-page coffee table book, South Carolina’s Sacred Spaces, has received much critical acclaim and is now in its second printing. All proceeds from the sale of this book go to Preservation South Carolina and its “Sacred Spaces Fund.”
