Preservation South Carolina

Preservation South Carolina, the only statewide non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, protecting, and advocating for South Carolina’s irreplaceable architectural heritage, seeks a knowledgeable, outgoing, and entrepreneurial President who will provide dynamic leadership for an organization poised for the next stage of its growth.

Reporting directly to an active and dedicated Board of Trustees, the President serves as the public face of Preservation South Carolina, manages all programs and the organization’s day-to-day operations, ensures the financial strength of the organization, and supervises the work of a small staff. Building on progress to date, the new President will spearhead new fundraising efforts to assure the organization’s long-term stability, soliciting major donors, foundations, business partners, and government funders; lead a strategic planning process; develop a plan to increase membership support; strengthen existing preservation partnerships across the state and build new ones; and continue the organization’s work of cultivating a strong statewide historic preservation ethic.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate a combination of some of the following:

  • Familiarity and experience working with non-profit organizations.
  • Strategic business sense and success in fundraising and networking.
  • Familiarity with real estate and historic preservation revolving funds.
  • Education and/or professional experience that encompasses current historic preservation philosophy and practice, including advocacy and the economics of preservation.
  • Experience with both urban and rural historic sites and African American heritage preservation.
  • Strong management skills and a collaborative approach to working with board, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with South Carolinians from all walks of life.
  • Political acumen and familiarity with local and state government.
  • Proficiency with current technology for programs and communication.

Founded in 1990 as the Palmetto Trust for Historic Preservation, today Preservation South Carolina manages a successful revolving fund and holds thirty-six protective easements in twenty-one counties. Its new Sacred Places initiative is bringing much-needed attention to the challenges facing historic rural congregations. It is currently leading the development of a major preservation plan for historic Penn Center on St. Helena Island and a $2 million restoration of the Gothic Revival Trinity Church in Abbeville.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: Salary commensurate with experience

Schedule: Monday to Friday office hours with flexibility for weekend and evening programing/events/advocacy

Education: Bachelor's (Preferred)

Work Location: Flexible. Currently one office location in Prosperity, SC with expectation of travel to maintain statewide interaction.

  • the preservation of properties, with real input in acquiring, stabilizing and reselling historic buildings for proper rehabilitation and reuse
  • the networking of passionate and talented preservationists in the Palmetto State, who can work together to professionally preserve our state one property, one district, one town at a time

Preservation South Carolina, a non-profit organization operating under 501 (c) 3 status since 1990, is based in Prosperity, just up the road from Columbia, and its dedicated staff and Board of Directors represent communities from all over South Carolina.
