Thomas C. Barnwell, Jr.

As a native of Hilton Head Thomas Barnwell has been a lifelong contributor and leader to the community, advocating and helping provide affordable housing, comprehensive health services and cooperative economic development. Today he is being recognized and honored for his vast historic preservation work, including the research, documentation and preservation of the oldest structure on Hilton Head Island, the Barnwell Tabby House. The jury recognized, that through his efforts, a deteriorated and threatened historic building is now a place of pride and learning and a tangible reminder of Hilton Head’s long history.
