To many people, design review in historic districts is what city preservation departments do. While it is an important part of their responsibilities, the City of Columbia’s Historic Preservation Program embraces their role as advocates for historic buildings, as a resource for historic property owners and promoter of preservation‘s benefits to the larger community. The jury was impressed by the variety of programs, including educational videos, newsletters, events and reports produced by the department including the recently released Economic Impact of Historic Preservation in Columbia done in partnership with the Historic Columbia Foundation.
